About the Episode
This episode features Dr Holly Ann Scheib, one of the authors of chapter 7 titled Promoting Diversity and Inclusion in the ‘International Community Development Practice’ book; and Dr Tina Lathouras who co-wrote on the chapter’s case studies.
Holly is the Secretary of IACD and Regional Trustee of IACD for North America and the Caribbean and President of Sage Consulting based in Santa Fe, New Mexico; while Tina is a Senior Lecturer in Social Work at the University of the Sunshine Coast (UniSC) in Queensland, Australia.
In the episode, they discuss how in order to respect and acknowledge diversity in communities, community development practice needs to go beyond working for inclusion but for integrality i.e., to work in a way that includes the diverse elements in communities as an integral and essential component of practice, and not merely ‘welcomed’ into the spaces where CD practice occurs.
It is also important to note that diversity is not something to be worked towards; a goal or an objective. Rather it is a continual process of refinement, improvement and learning towards ever better practice.
