New extended deadline to submit abstracts for the climate change and community development issue of Practice Insights magazine – 15 September 2022

We are delighted to extend our call for articles for this issue of Practice Insights magazine to 15 September 2022! Read on for more information.

From the desk of Paul Lachapelle, former IACD President and current Trustee for North America and the Caribbean:

The next issue of IACD’s Practice Insights magazine will focus on the ways that community development practitioners are enabling communities to combat climate change. We’re inviting you to propose a contribution to this issue: please consider responding if you have experience of working with communities on issues that relate to climate change, whether or not you are also experienced in writing for publication: we will provide supportive comments and suggestions on your proposal (“abstract”) and your article. Read on for further details!

Increasingly, the impacts of our changing climate are taking a dramatic toll on our communities, with no region immune to its impacts and challenges.  The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has issued multiple statements that humans are changing Earth’s climate and the evidence is compelling: climate change is increasingly affecting people’s lives, and the impacts are having significant adverse effects on communities and the ecosystems that support society.

The next issue of the IACD magazine Practice Insights (https://www.iacdglobal.org/practice-insights-magazine/) will focus on community development responses to the climate change crisis:  on how community development practitioners enable communities to respond, mitigate, adapt, and strive for positive change – focusing on resilience and growth to overcome the often seemingly insurmountable challenges of climate change.  IACD sees community development as a necessary and important strategy for positive strengthening of individuals and systems, and we want Practice Insights to highlight how the challenges of the climate crisis are compelling innovation, encouragement, opportunity, and resilience.  Suggested topics include the role of community development in:

  • Local responses to supporting communities impacted by climate change due to acute disasters and/or chronic stress,
  • Re-shaping of public services in response to community needs and weaknesses in systems highlighted by climate change,
  • The role of young people as caretakers, community organizers, and advocates in climate change mitigation and adaptation,
  • Innovations in technology for the purposes of addressing climate change at the community level,
  • Creative innovations to climate protection, social connection, and communication,
  • Coordination with public health and/or medical health responses in the face of acute emergencies related to climate change-related weather events.

We are asking IACD members and other interested contributors to respond to this “Call for Abstracts” describing their articles in 500 words or less by September 15, 2022.  Guest Editors Paul Lachapelle, Anita Paul, Colin Ross, and Dee Brooks will coordinate this Special Issue.  Editors will respond to all proposed Abstracts by Aug. 15; invited authors will then have until Sept. 30 to submit their 1500 word article (and photos).  The articles will undergo a peer review process and authors will then have three weeks to address any suggested edits.   Please help us market our Call by sharing with your networks.  We look forward to receiving your Abstracts!
