The IACD team are currently writing a book called International Community Development Practice, co-edited by IACD President Anna Clarke, Past President Charlie McConnell and Board member Daniel Muia. The book, which will be around 300 pages, is intended to become an invaluable key text for community development practitioners and managers, community development educators, students and policy advisers. Our target is to publish and launch the book at the 2021 World Community Development Conference in Nairobi June 2021.

Earlier this year we invited IACD members and other community development practitioners and educators worldwide to register interest in contributing case studies for inclusion in the book. A huge thank you to all of you who submitted Abstracts for possible selection. The editors have now selected the 40 case studies from around the world which will be included in the book. We shall be writing to everyone to let you know if your case study has been selected or not by November. If your case study was not selected for the book, we may be interested in publishing it in the IACD magazine or posting it on the website.

The book will have ten chapters based around the eight key themes within the IACD International Standards for Community Development practice published in 2018 and since translated into over a dozen languages.   It will also include a substantive review of the emergence of the professional community development practitioner since the 1950’s when IACD was founded and the U.N. started to encourage member governments to promote community development. The final chapter will outline possible future priorities and challenges for the profession over the coming decade.

The other eight chapters, which will each include five case studies and photos to illustrate practice around the chapter theme, are:

  • How to put ethics and values into practice;
  • How to engage with communities;
  • How to ensure participatory planning with the community;
  • How to organise for change;
  • How to support learning for change;
  • How to promote diversity and inclusion;
  • How to build leadership and infrastructure;
  • How to develop and improve policy and practice.
