We are seeking a dedicated Board Trustee & Honorary Treasurer to join our international Board of Trustees and help steer our financial governance and long-term global sustainability.


Location: Remote (Meetings online)

Time Commitment:

Meetings: 4 Board meetings and 1 AGM per year. Chairing Finance and Fundraising Sub Committee and attending Executive Committee meetings. Approx. 6 hours per month

Voluntary (Reasonable travel and operational expenses reimbursed when required)


Purpose of the Role

The Treasurer maintains a strategic overview of IACD’s financial affairs, working with the board of trustees to ensure financial viability, effective use of resources, compliance with OSCR (Office of the Scottish Charity Regulator) and relevant statutory frameworks. Working closely with our Board, Chair, and Staff Team, you will ensure financial data is translated into clear, plain-language insights for non-financial Trustees.


Key Responsibilities


Financial Governance & Strategy

  • Lead the Board in setting annual budgets and long-term financial plans aligned with IACD’s strategic goals.
  • Monitor income, expenditure, reserves policy, and cash flow position, advising the Board on financial risks and key assumptions.
  • Appraise the financial viability of international projects, funding proposals, and key operational developments.
  • Ensure proper records are kept and that effective financial procedures and controls are in place, i.e.:
  • Cheque signatories
  • Purchasing limits
  • Purchasing systems
  • Salary payments
  • Pensions
  • PAYE and NI payments
  • Others as appropriate

Reporting & Compliance

  • Guide and advise the Board on the approval of quarterly management accounts and annual statutory statements.
  • Ensure annual accounts are prepared in compliance with the Charities SORP (FRS 102) and submitted to OSCR on time.
  • Lead on appointing and liaising with accountants and independent examiners.
  • Present the annual financial accounts to members at the Annual General Meeting (AGM) in an accessible format. 

Oversight & Controls

  • Ensure proper financial policies, internal controls, and risk management procedures are maintained to safeguard resources and prevent fraud.
  • Liaise with staff, relevant trustees and designated others to oversee banking arrangements, signatory mandates, and statutory payments.

Person Specification


Essential

  • Commitment to IACD’s values, aims, and international community development mission.
  • Background or experience in accounting, bookkeeping, or strategic financial management.
  • Ability to translate complex financial information into clear, understandable language for non-financial Board members.
  • Good independent judgment, sound analysis skills, and willingness to offer constructive scrutiny.
  • Understanding of charity governance and acceptance of the legal duties, responsibilities, and liabilities of a Scottish charity trustee (or within a UK context). 

Desirable

  • Prior knowledge of charity accounting standards (Charities SORP) and OSCR regulatory requirements. 

Support, Induction & Commitment

  • Meetings: The Board meets quarterly (primarily via video conference across global time zones), alongside the annual AGM.
  • Induction: New Trustees receive an induction package, including background documentation, strategic plans, and one-to-one handovers with key Board officers.
  • First-Time Trustees: Prior Board experience is not required. We strongly encourage applications from diverse backgrounds and first-time Trustees looking to bring their financial skills to a global network.
