Episode Five: Learning for Change

You can now listen to the fifth installment in our new podcast, International Community Development Practice! All episodes are produced for IACD by IACD member and Wales-based CD practitioner Russell Todd (twitter.com/llannerch). Read on and listen below!

About the Episode

This episode features the authors of chapter 6, titled Learning For Change, in the ‘International Community Development Practice’ book: Colin Ross , Kwok-Kin ‘KK’ Fung, and Suet-Lin ‘Shirley’ Hung.

Colin and KK are European and East Asian trustees respectively of IACD and you can find more information about them on the IACD website: www.iacdglobal.org/about/board-members/

Shirley, like KK, lectures in social work at the Hong Kong Baptist University: sowk.hkbu.edu.hk/en/people/faculty_staff/

They are joined by one of the case study contributors Ammar Bahadur Air of Sahakarmi Samaj in Nepal.

They discuss how learning, a core element of community development practice, can follow a framework for practice that starts with using people’s experiences, knowledge and skills; and sees people in communities not as passive recipients of learning but, in keeping with Paulo Freire’s teachings, as active, creative participants in the learning journey. They remind us that community development practitioners also continue to learn.
