Young People in Community Development

IACD’s Youth Correspondents

Many of our student members join us because they want to learn more about potential career paths in the field of community development. Our student members are highly active within IACD — beyond learning from our network of practitioners, these students also have a lot to teach our network!

Our Youth Correspondent in Kenya, Wanja Kiongo, is an example of a student member who is already leading the way in her community and making a huge difference. On Friday, Wanja took over IACD’s Instagram account to tell us a bit more about herself — check out the highlights below!

You can follow IACD on Instagram for daily updates.

IACD: Hi Wanja! Please tell us a bit about yourself.

Wanja: My name is Wanja Kiongo. I am from Nyeri, Kenya. I am currently pursuing a degree in Community Development at Chuka University.

IACD: How long have you been a member of IACD? What prompted you to join our association?

Wanja: I’ve been a member of IACD since April 2019. I serve as a youth correspondent for Kenya. I first heard about IACD when I was doing my research on platforms that have people who are passionate about community development and have experience in the field. I wanted to learn, experience as well as get a chance to network. And so far, it has been a great journey for me.

IACD: How would you describe yourself?

Wanja: I’d describe myself as jovial, an optimist and caring.

IACD: What is your advice to students who are currently studying toward a community development degree?

Wanja: My advice to students studying community development would be to engage and involve themselves in activities and events in community development. This gives you an idea of what it is all about. Be a curious student, and take up opportunities both in school and out of school. Especially volunteer work as it also creates a space for networking and having mentors in the field.

IACD: Finally, just a fun question — who would headline at your dream house party?

Wanja: Florida Georgia Line would headline my house party! First song they would play – Simple.
