Episode 1 - Tackling racism through building solidarity with Daniel Muia

Daniel Muia joins Anna Clarke, Strategic Director of the International Association for Community Development (IACD), in this episode marking the International Week of Solidarity with the Peoples Struggling against Racism and Racial Discrimination (21-27 March), the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (21 March), and the International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade (25 March).

Daniel Muia is the Chair of the International Association for Community Development (IACD). He is also a Senior Lecturer, teaching Community Development at Kenyatta University in Nairobi, Kenya and a Founding Chair of the Association of Community Development Practitioners - Kenya (ACDP-K).

As part of the discussion, Daniel identifies the three components of solidarity according to Emile Durkheim: Inter-dependence, Collective Consciousness and Social Cohesion.

Episode 2 - The Importance of a Structural Analysis with Gary Craig

In the second episode of our short series marking International Week of Solidarity with the Peoples Struggling against Racism and Racial Discrimination (21-27 March), Anna Clarke is joined by Prof. Gary Craig. Gary talks about the importance of not just being active against racism but having a strong structural analysis of its causes. He also talks about how he started exploring aspects of modern slavery.

Gary has had a long academic career, most recently at the University of York, during which he became the first person in the world to hold a Chair in Social Justice. In 2007, he co-founded the Wilberforce Institute for the study of Slavery and Emancipation (WISE) and is a past President of the IACD.

Episode 3 - Racism and hierarchies of oppression with Anastasia Crickley

In the latest episode of our series marking International Week of Solidarity with the Peoples Struggling against Racism and Racial Discrimination (21-27 March), Anna Clarke is joined by Anastasia Crickley who has had several roles at IACD and is currently an Advisor to the IACD’s International Relations Committee.

Anastasia has had a long career in Community Development practice and education. She also served as President of the United Nations Committee of the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. As well as talking from her perspective working with the Traveller and Roma communities, Anastasia provides a biographical insight into how she learned about attitudes to racism in her youth in rural Ireland.
