On World Refugee Day, the International Association for Community Development (IACD) extends its support and solidarity to the millions of refugees worldwide. They have been forcibly displaced from their homes by conflict, persecution, violence, human rights violations, and the escalating impacts of climate change. This day serves as a critical reminder of our collective responsibility to uphold their inherent right to seek international protection, and to recognise their resilience, courage, and determination in the face of significant adversity.
The global number of forcibly displaced people continues to rise, presenting challenges for both host communities and those working to support them. The UNHCR notes that, as of late 2024, approximately 122.6 million people were forcibly displaced worldwide, a stark increase that underscores the urgency of our collective action. In this critical context, IACD asserts that community development practice, principles and values are more crucial than ever in fostering inclusive, welcoming, and empowering environments for refugees.
We recognise that refugees are not passive recipients of aid, but active agents of change with diverse skills, invaluable experiences, and rich cultural heritage. Their inclusion in communities, when adequately supported, contributes significantly to vibrant social and economic growth for all. The World Refugee Day 2025 theme, "Solidarity with Refugees," resonates with IACD's focus on collective unity and shared humanity in welcoming and integrating refugees.
The IACD reaffirms its commitment to:
- Advocating for the rights and dignity of refugees.
- Fostering social cohesion and inclusion.
- Supporting capacity building and skill development for refugees and host communities.
- Highlighting the importance of sustainable development by addressing the root causes of displacement, including poverty, inequality, discrimination, persecution, lack of good governance and climate change. These actions are fundamental to creating a more peaceful, stable, and just world for everyone.
On this World Refugee Day, the IACD urges all individuals, organisations, and governments to reflect on the challenges faced by refugees, and redouble efforts in creating a more compassionate and just world.
