We are delighted that there has been a large and diverse response to the Call for Participation for the Community is the answer international gathering. Thank you to all those who submitted proposals! In order to have as rich a spread of contributions as possible, however, we are particularly keen to encourage more participation by those who wish to share practice experience of community-led development. The deadline for submissions has therefore been extended to 14th January 2014.

150 speakers and delegates from around Europe and the USA attended the Social Innovation in Micro-Savings conference in Brussels, Belgium on 9 and 10 September 2013. Held to disseminate the results of a two-year action research project and to explore implications for policy and practice, the event also explored wider issues around poverty, asset building and inclusion. Members of the International Association for Community Development attended the Annual General Meeting 2013 in London last month. We were hosted by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation and were pleased to be joined by members from the UK, Ireland, France, Hong Kong, the USA, Australia, New Zealand and Nigeria.

IACD celebrated its 60th anniversary last month at a reception hosted by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation in London, UK. We were welcomed by its Director, Andrew Barnett and then heard perspectives on this history of community development from IACD past president Gary Craig. President Ingrid Burkett then shared her vision for priorities now and going forward. We also heard from Mohammed Aden, a Somalian community development student at Goldsmiths, and Stewart Murdoch, Chair of the Planning Group for our 2014 international conference, Community is the answer. We were delighted to be joined by local and international colleagues active in the field of community-led development.

A group of IACD members and Scottish community development agencies met at the Carnegie UK Trust offices in Dunfermline, Scotland last month to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Association. Angus Hogg, Chair of the Trustees of the Carnegie UK Trust gave some initial words of welcome. Charlie McConnell, who was Chief Executive of the Carnegie Trust from 2003-2008, and the person responsible for bringing the IACD headquarters to Scotland in 1999, then gave a brief overview of the history of community development and the important role of IACD.

IACD recently took part in a workshop which explored examples of individuals and communities building financial assets, or savings, as opposed to relying on credit. Held at The Hague University of Applied Sciences, and organised jointly by the European Microfinance Network and ACAF (the Association of Self-Funded Communities), the event brought together grassroots groups, microfinance institutions, banks, credit unions and academic institutions.
