The IACD has been active since 1952 in supporting community development internationally. In 1999, the IACD was re-constituted and the Secretariat moved to Scotland and is a registered Scottish charity (SC036090).

IACD holds an Annual General Meeting each year, usually coinciding with the global conference, in which members discuss the business of the organisation.  IACD also produced an annual report with the financial statements of the organisation that are reviewed by an independent examiner.
