Charismatic Leadership and its impact on community development

At the IACD conference in Portugal, a roundtable discussion explored charismatic leadership and its impact on community development.  Using an actual case uncovered in University of Minnesota Extension’s tourism work with a small rural community in the United States, the discussion provided roundtable participants with strategies for engaging learners and practitioners.  The conversation was rich with ideas and experiences which helped roundtable facilitators frame the example into a video-based teaching case study.

Drawing on an 18-year longitudinal study in San Luis, Colorado by the University of Minnesota Tourism Center, the case explores the role of a charismatic leader, and the costs and benefits of charismatic leadership in a community.   The case is designed for use in community settings for adults active in community development, or in college classrooms for future community leaders.   This comprehensive case package includes learners’ guide and facilitator’s guide in PDF, and a 20-minute video. The materials are applicable to community settings for adults active in community development, or in college classrooms for future community leaders. The case study is FREE to download and use: http://www.extension.umn.edu/community/leadership/charismatic-leaders/
